Empty rooftop into an evening lounge

A bare concrete roof with a water tank, zoned into a place to sit after sunset.

These are design concepts created to show what's possible — not photographs of completed client projects.

Objective

Make the largest space in the building somewhere the family actually goes.

The challenge

Bare concrete that holds heat all day, no shade, and fixed services — a water tank and satellite dish — that can't move and dominate the space.

Design direction

Zone away from the services rather than trying to hide them. Decking in the seating zone only, so cost stays proportionate. Large planting in weighted containers to give the space edges and handle the wind. Lighting is the main move: the roof is for evenings.

Selected materials

  • Timber decking over part of the slab
  • Modular low seating
  • Olive trees in oversized weighted planters
  • Jute outdoor rug
  • Festoon lighting on slim poles
